The Lake District

Up in the northern part of England almost touching the border to Scotland, the Lake District offers unique access to hiking trails, biking. and classic English countryside. The Lake District is one of the most beautiful places in the country so much that it received a UNESCO World Heritage status. As the name implies, the Lake District is not one singular town or lake, which could make traveling a bit difficult if you do not rent a car; however, do not let that divert you from visiting. Before traveling you should make a list of a few towns you would like to see and accept that you might not see all the big sights the district has to offer.

Getting to the Lake District:

  • If you wish to go by train, pre-book about 11 weeks in advance specific trains in order to get the lowest prices. www.nationalrail.co.uk is the best site for finding train times & fares. You will be going from London Euston (EUS) and your destination will be Windermere or Penrith

  • Rent a car

My experience

  • I found that renting a car was the best way to travel through the Lake District. A few words of caution, many of the roads are very steep making it hard for the rental car to scale the hill.

  • I really loved just driving around and pulling over to small towns to walk around in for 30 minutes.
